Water, sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH)

Water Scarcity and Sanitation Needs in Sudan

Across war-torn regions of Sudan, access to safe water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) remains a critical challenge. Communities face water scarcity, inadequate sanitation facilities, and a lack of knowledge about proper hygiene practices. These factors contribute to the spread of waterborne diseases, impacting health, well-being, and overall development.

SAHARI’s WASH Approach: A Symphony of Solutions

At SAHARI, we believe everyone deserves access to clean water, safe sanitation, and good hygiene. Our WASH program acts as a symphony of solutions, addressing each element with a comprehensive approach:

Water:
Restoring Hope, One Well at a Time: We repair and rehabilitate existing wells, boreholes, and handpumps, and where needed, construct new ones to ensure reliable access to safe water.
Testing and Treating for Safe Consumption: We train community members on basic water quality testing and provide simple treatment solutions like chlorination tablets or biosand filters, empowering communities to manage their own

water safety.
Harvesting the Power of Rain: We promote rainwater harvesting techniques for individual households and communities, offering a sustainable solution to collect and store precious rainwater for later use.

Emergency Water Delivery: For areas facing severe water scarcity or during emergencies, we provide water trucking to bridge the gap and ensure immediate access to life-saving water.

Sanitation:
Building Dignity: Latrine Construction and Hygiene Promotion: We construct household latrines or communal sanitation facilities, and educate communities on their proper use and maintenance, promoting dignity and health.

Safe Disposal of Waste: We address fecal sludge management (FSM) by building and maintaining appropriate sanitation facilities, while educating communities on safe waste disposal practices.

Empowering Communities: Community-Led Total Sanitation (CLTS): We employ the CLTS approach, a participatory method which empowers communities to identify and eliminate open defecation practices, leading to a sustainable open defecation free (ODF) environment.

Hygiene:
Promoting Healthy Habits: We organize educational workshops and activities that promote good hygiene practices, such as handwashing with soap at critical times, menstrual hygiene management, and safe food handling.

Equipping Communities: We distribute hygiene kits containing essential items like soap, toothpaste, menstrual hygiene products, and more.

Schools as Pillars of Health: We implement comprehensive WASH education programs in schools, focusing on handwashing with soap at crucial times and proper toilet use, instilling healthy habits in future generations.

Mobilizing for Change: We engage community leaders, women’s groups, and youth groups to spread WASH awareness and mobilize them to become active participants in local WASH initiatives.

SAHARI’s Impact: Transforming Lives, One Drop at a Time

Since 2005, SAHARI has been at the forefront of providing life-saving WASH services to IDPs, refugees, returnees, and host communities across Sudan. Our commitment to inclusivity ensures that all voices are heard and all needs are addressed. We collaborate with local authorities, UN agencies, private sector donors, and civil society to maximize our impact.
